Let the Specialists Take Care of IT, Outsource

A common misconception with IT leads everyone to believe it’s only one thing. Many people consider an IT problem like a car problem – take it to the mechanic, they’ll know how to fix it. IT is more like the human body than a car – if something goes wrong, you want a specialist to take care of the issue.

As a result, we ensure that each member of our Engineering team specialises in at least one area.  This means that we can dedicate the most pertinent engineer to any issues you need us to resolve. Rather than having a series of “jack-of-all-trades”, we have targeted IT specialists who understand the deeper workings of the subject area, as well as functional training in all other areas.

The importance of IT specialists

An example of this comes from a server we came across, near top of the range when it was new, and had been built by the companies’ IT guy. Everything in it was put together correctly and the server worked well enough. It was only when we were brought on board that it was noticed that the types of hard drive used was far from optimal.

The adage, “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link”. This is particularly true in IT, where “bottlenecking” is a very common problem. In this case, the HDDs were far below the standard of the rest of the equipment. This means that the company wasted several thousand pounds on technology which may not work optimally. And because of their integration with the HDDs, they could not be swapped out without rebuilding the entire server. They had paid for a £15,000 server and accepted advice from someone, who while being good in most areas of IT, was not a server specialist. That resulted in a server which worked as well as a comparable server worth £2,000. Without specialist instruction, small oversights like this can have huge implications.
